Landscape Building of Falmer Campus, University of Brighton by Hopkins Architects. The University of Brighton is redeveloping its campus at Falmer just outside the city under an ongoing masterplan, which will replace obsolete building stock with a variety of new facilities. Hopkins Architects designed Phases 4 and 5 which comprise academic facilities including the new Schools of Education, Languages, and Historical and Critical Studies in addition to support facilities such as catering, Student Union offices, a bar and a nursery.

The 9,000 m2 scheme is located on an elevated part of the site which enjoys superb views over the South Downs. Designed as a series of simple but flexibly planned, environmentally sustainable buildings, the schools are linked by bright atrium social spaces which allow them to balance their separate identities with the efficient use of mutual spaces. The buildings are also designed to be future proof and allow for further expansion. A new central external ‘agora’ space will be used as a device around which the new and old buildings on the site will be able to focus creating a new heart to the campus.
