Landscape Building of Dahua Shanghai, China by HLW. Project Description: A competition to design the Da Hua Hu Cheng Development on a 7.7-acre site in northwest Shanghai.
The ensemble of mixed use buildings totals 604,800 square-feet and includes office space, commercial lofts and retail shops. Target Insight: Highlight the attributes of the two parcels of land, separated by a park, by creating strikingly different architectural statements on each parcel while meeting the mixed-use requirement.
Outcome: One parcel supports three office towers, ranging from 12 to 16 stories, square in plan and oriented on the north-south axis to maximize southern exposure. Irregularly shaped, two-story retail pavilions emerge from under the towers, sculpting the public space into intimate courtyards.
By contrast, the second parcel is populated by simple, rectangular three-story commercial lofts or “villas” wrapped in a skin of stone and glass.
