Graphic Design Architecture of Cardinal Pole Catholic School by JesticoWhiles. Jestico + Whiles has been appointed by Mouchel Babcock Education to design the new Cardinal Pole Catholic School as part of the Phase Two Hackney BSF Programme.
The school was established in 1959 and currently operates on a split site. The proposals will unite the school on one site, on Morning Lane in Hackney. A three-storey building has been devised from the detailed brief the various physical site constraints. A strong elevation has been maintained to the west, on the busy Morning Lane, allowing access through one main entrance to more secure courtyard play areas on the east side of the building.
The brief specified an education system based on three learning communities. These have been expressed in the building’s form working vertically over the three floors. A generous central street links these spaces and works in many ways: allowing natural lighting and ventilation, relaxed circulation and social interaction.
