First landscaped in 1750 and with a long and storied history, the Alnwick Garden had fallen into disrepair and was closed by 1950.

A major redevelopment began in 1997 and by 2001 the first of several phases of dramatically transformed and contemporary public garden space was opened to the public.

The revamped garden proved extremely popular for members of the public and a building was soon needed to welcome and care for them. The new pavilion we designed for the site serves this purpose and is built off the enclosing entrance wall on a site overlooking the Garden.

It includes a restaurant and function room arranged on either side of a covered terrace from which visitors to the site can enjoy the garden in shelter and shade. Kitchens and backup spaces are housed below.

Conceived as a contemporary greenhouse, the building houses organic, barrel-vaulted spaces formed by timber and steel lattice roofs covered in inflated transparent or translucent ETFE pillows. These reduce the effects of solar heating and glare. External walls are either glazed with sliding doors or fixed with solid timber panels.

Melbourne Science Park Cambridge, UK - Michael Aukett Architects

Michael Aukett Architects collaborated very closely with Aukett Tytherleigh and Aukett Brockliss Guy to create this striking HQ building design for our client, the wireless communication and technology specialist, TPP Com.

Rhodes Waterside, Sydney - batessmart

The waterfront site slopes toward Homebush Bay with views across the water and mangroves to the Olympic Stadium. The concept evolved from a desire to offer north facing water views with solar access and cross ventilation to the maximum number of apartments.

The design consists of two finger-like buildings with a courtyard open to the waterfront. The north finger step-downs from 7 to 4 storeys as well as stepping back from the street alignment to create special corner apartments. The southern finger steps up as it approaches the water, gaining views over the northern finger as well as solar access.

A generous internal courtyard opens onto the waterfront promenade allowing shared waterfront views forapartments and creating a glimpse from the public promenade. Each building has a combination of single level apartments and two storey crossover apartments with corridors at every two floors.

This apartment typology ensures all apartments enjoy natural cross ventilation and receive good solar penetration to living areas. The material palette contrasts natural materials, such as dry stacked sandstone and copper, with crisp planar forms. The folded roof planes of oxidised copper emphasise the building geometry. Five Dock Mixed Use Development Five Dock, Sydney - batessmart

The aim was to knit together the local pedestrian networks and open spaces to create a new urban square with a lively, mixed use civic character. The brick base complements the Federation character of Five Dock, integrating the development with the streetscape.

The apartments sit above this brick podium and are arranged around a landscaped courtyard which is open to the north. The ‘L’ shaped form maximises solar access and views towards both Canada Bay and the city skyline. The project includes a wide range of apartment types including 2 storey maisonettes, terraces, garden apartmentsand two storey penthouses in addition to 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, to create a diverse social mix.

Large balconies with glazed balustrades run the full length of each apartment, with both the living areas and bedrooms opening on to them. The terrace apartments each have their own roof garden.

Olympic VeloPark London 2012 - Hopkins Architects

The building seeks to form an elegant response to the brief using simple materials in an efficient manner to meet the client’s aspirations within the available budget. Cycling inspired the concept for the Velodrome.  The bike is an ingenious ergonomic object, honed to unrivalled efficiency; we wanted the same application of design creativity and engineering rigour that goes into the design and manufacture of the bike to manifest itself in the building.

Not as a mimicry of the bicycle but as a three dimensional response to the functional requirements of the venue whose distinctive form has emerged from an integrated design team approach which focused on the performance and efficiency of every aspect of the building.

Olympic VeloPark London 2012 - Hopkins Architects

The Velodrome contains 6,000 seats in both Olympic and Legacy modes and responds to both contexts in an appropriate manner with minimal transformation.  The upper and lower seating tiers are split by the main public circulation concourse which forms the main point of entry into the arena and allows spectators to maintain contact with the action on the track as they circulate around the building.

The concourse is fully glazed to allow views both into and out of the building.  It also helps to visually separate the Western Red Cedar clad upper bowl from the ground floor back of house accommodation which is largely hidden behind the landscaped earth berms that form a visual plinth at the East and West ends of the building.

The Olympic Delivery Authority set a number of sustainability and material targets; through careful consideration and integration of the architecture, structure and building services the design has met or exceeded these requirements. Work on the competition scheme began in May 2007 with announcement of the results made in August 2007. Work started on site on 23rd February 2009 and was completed ahead of programme and on budget on 13th January 2011.

The London 2012 VeloPark was a collaboration with Expedition Engineering, BDSP and Grant Associates.

Adriana Marina Hotel & Spa - JesticoWhiles

This world class hotel is a striking addition to the waterfront promenade providing one of the most luxurious spa facilities in the Adriatic. The sophisticated simplicity of the design maximises views of the town and respects the surrounding sloping terraced hillside.

Together with a luxurious spa and outdoor treatment terraces, the hotel became Croatia’s first member of the esteemed ‘Leading Small Hotels of the World’ group. Hotel Adriana’s 53 bedrooms and eight apartment suites, a luxury spa and rooftop swimming pool all have magnificent views of the harbour and old town.

The external facade is made from elegant sandstone with narrow sliding shutters, whilst the stylish interiors form a neutral backdrop and provide a welcoming atmosphere.

Hackney Service Centre - Hopkins Architects

The council and ceremonial activities will continue to take place in the Town Hall. The new building occupies five principal floors, with a main entrance from a new plaza area on Hillman Street.  At its heart is an atrium, the main focus of the building, housing the Council’s public reception, known as the One Stop Shop, with a waiting area, cafe and call centre.

The upper floors, entered discreetly on the corners of Hillman Street, accommodate the staff lifts, and stairs are located in the corners of the building providing animated, visual signals. The accommodation on the upper floors is mainly open-plan workspace with areas for support, informal meetings, break out and tea points.

The building services specification demonstrates a 10% reduction in carbon emissions and 10% of energy generation from renewable sources.  This will be achieved by providing a combination of gas and wood pellet boilers as well as solar panels or wind turbines.
