A successful, identifiable addition to the Shanghai skyline. The building’s public plaza was designed to draw shoppers into an interior atrium – a welcoming entry to a bustling, five-story retail podium.

Maroubra Bay Hotel Maroubra, Sydney - batessmart

Its facade was restored to the original exposed brickwork and rendered cornices and the existing pub was retained at ground floor. New apartments inserted into the fabric of the existing building at the upper levels maintained the original heritage character including floor to ceiling heights and room configurations where possible.

Two new wings of residential apartments were added, sympathetic in scale to the hotel but clearly contrasting and contemporary in nature, creating an ‘L’ shaped building that follows the street alignment and encloses an internal gardenc courtyard. Dual orientation apartments have cross ventilation, ocean views to the living rooms and north facing bedrooms with balconies overlooking the internal courtyard.

Bi-folding shutters set within steel framed balconies provide privacy for residents and animate the street facades. Above the hotel a single level of apartments is setback from the street edge, extending across the existing and new buildings and uniting the composition. This level is clad in layers of glass aluminium louvres for a contemporary interpretation of the rooftop forms of historic buildings.

Proximity Apartments Arncliffe, New South Wales - batessmart

This development consists of four residential buildings connected by a landscaped publicly accessible podium which together with retail street frontages conceals basement and ground level carparking. Building A (122 apartments) is a 20 level hinged plan tower with street frontage for retail prominently located at the corner of Lusty and Arncliffe Streets which defines the project address and the entry to the precinct.

Bulding B (102 apartments) is a 14 level building with multiple lift cores located to the southern edge of the site fronting the podium. Buildings D (42 apartments) and E (28 apartments) are located across the Lusty and Arncliffe Street frontages with retail at street level and four levels of apartments over.

The low rise buildings use dark brickwork with a rhythm of cantilevered boxes to create a humane scaled streetscape. The larger buildings use a combination of colour and vertical urban windows to create an abstract composition that is legible at the urban scale.

Target Insight: Create a highly efficient, intelligent and harmonious system that responds to the functional needs of the Shanghai urban region as a world-class, inter-modal transportation hub. Outcome: The design meets the needs of the individual traveler, linking the airport terminal, maglev trains, metro, the bus station and the Qingpu light rail station.

A 20-meter wide, central “Urban Walk” allows seamless and undisturbed passenger flow through every single transport mode on this uninterrupted pedestrian link, reducing walking distances for passengers by providing multiple entry and exit points and maximizing the efficiency for all riders of the various transportation modes.

Target Insight: The master plan for the new land is a circular lake surrounded by concentric ring roads, bisected by radial feeder roads and lagoons.

The building site is on the first concentric road, facing the new lake. Outcome: In July 2007, the building broke ground, or “cracked ground”, with a pile driver and more than a hundred kilos of firecrackers. This project is scheduled for completion in 2009.

The development echoes the undulations of the surrounding parkland, essentially drawing the landscape into the built environment. The building consists of a series of staggered, fluid forms that step down from the high-to medium-rise scale of St Kilda Road to the east, to the lower scale of Queens Road.

On the southern side, the lowest levels are set back and the higher levels step forward to create a ‘notch’ in the façade, which acknowledges the presence of Grosvenor mansion. A three level podium provides interaction with Queens Lane, and also reflects and acknowledges the scale and masonry construction of the historic house.

On the lower levels, a podium acknowledges the historic scale of adjacent buildings, while the tower has a hybrid aesthetic compatible with the surrounding high-rise office buildings.

The tower form is expressed as two slender, glazed, rectilinear volumes that house two apartments per floor. This layout maximises views by locating the living spaces at the front of the building in a large, projecting ‘bay window’. Sustainability is optimised – every apartment has north and south orientation with ventilation to three sides.

Schlumberger’s soaring masts, and glowing, billowing fabric roof point into the Fenland sky, along with King’s College Chapel.

Its appearance on the skyline may be romantic, but this is essentially a practical building, with a subtle relationship between form and function. Under the fabric roof are the drilling-rig test station and the main social space known as the ‘winter garden’.

Both benefit from the roof form, the workshop because it needs height for drilling and the winter garden because its light and shape gives it the character of an outdoor space, while protecting it from the weather. The fabric covering is Teflon coated glass fibre.

It is uninsulated and transmits about 13% daylight. A cat’s cradle of cables transmits the weight of the fabric to the ground via four structures like suspension bridges.

Beside these main spaces are layers of smaller ones in two independently structured wings; monitoring and planning rooms look into the workshop, and small private offices line the outside face, where they enjoy views over the landscape. Weaving the spaces together is a network of circulation and informal meeting spaces, encouraging that vital casual contact between colleagues within a scientific community.
