Building Design of Portland Hill Development, University of Nottingham by Hopkins Architects. The Portland Hill Development follows the completion of the Jubilee Campus (1999) and the National College for School Leadership (2002) for the University of Nottingham.
The original campus had buildings from several different periods, with a pair of symmetrical Portland stone and copper-roofed buildings at its heart. As the university grew, a series of temporary huts were built behind the Portland building to provide extra facilities.
Our masterplan for the whole campus proposed a re-ordering of the Portland building into the main student union and services accommodation, now providing a greater range of facilities including a bookshop, mini-market and student welfare centre, while strengthening the character of the campus. Our design adds a different dimension to the institutional character of the original building, enabling a more permeable flow between inside and outside.
