The existing school, which has specialist language college status, is a Roman Catholic voluntary-aided school under the trusteeship of the Servite Sisters. The design proposals reconcile a series of challenging site constraints on a very small site with significant level changes.

Arranged over four storeys, the building includes a rooftop multi-use games pitch above the sports hall. The design incorporates a two-phase construction process to allow for decanting in stages.

This form is wrapped in a  “puffer jacket” of structural fabric pillows, which streamline the building aerodynamically and provide a first line of defence against the harsh climate.

Four pairs of articulated hydraulic legs and feet allow stepping above drifting snow and generate the forward walking movement necessary to relocate the buildings, in order to counteract the gradual flow of the Ice Shelf.

The form of the building, and its ground clearance have been deliberately engineered to manage snow drifting. The structure is planned with a flexible interior, fitted out with custom-designed pods as bedrooms, bathrooms, a bar, gym, offices and plant rooms, all bolted in place on site.

The building consists of the new departments for the School for Optoelectronics Research Centre and the School for Electronics and Computer Science, replacing a previous facility that was destroyed by a fire in 2005. The practice has delivered a high quality scientific research establishment to attract the best international talent and industry funding.

Approaching from all sides the cafe emerges as an elegant wood clad, shelter, with a glazed frontage, making full use of the spectacular views. The layers of the building create continuity between inside and outside space.

There is fixed public bench seating along the path for passers by to enjoy the setting and a raised café terrace, providing covered seating for 120, overlooking the lake.

The organic timber lined interior, with space for 100 more formal  covers, has fully retractable glazed doors that open up to the terrace. Behind these public layers the kitchen, storage and service yard are all set into a newly landscaped hill.

Austrian Larch was used throughout the building because of its warm colour and suitability for external and internal use. The larch, forming the primary structure and envelope of the building, has been left untreated externally so that it gradually weathers over time.

Inside, the larch is oiled to retain its bright colour on a series of subtly curving wall panels, emphasizing the building’s organic and asymmetrical geometry.
